District Jail Jind is gearing up to start its prison radio soon. The process of auditions in the jail has already been completed. 7 inmates have been chosen as Radio Jockeys out of which 4 are under life imprisonment and rest 3 are under trials. This time a set of 14 singers have also been chosen separately, with 6 undergoing life imprisonment. The auditions were conducted by Dr. Vartika Nanda, prison reformer and the Founder of Tinka Tinka Foundation, which is working for the upliftment of inmates. Prison Radio in Haryana is the brainchild of Vartika Nanda.
About the Jail
District Jail Jind was established on 22 November 1985. There are about 1000 inmates including 28 women inmates against the sanctioned capacity of 669 inmates.
Training to be imparted to the inmates
There are a total of 19 jails in Haryana, out of which radio has already been launched in District jails Faridabad and Panipat and also in Central jail Ambala under Phase I of the project. The process has been initiated in District jail Jind to train the inmates to organize and broadcast the progamme for inhouse radio. The next step shall be to prepare the radio room for the broadcast.
Inhouse jail radio has already begun in the limited range of jail premises in 3 of the 19 jails of Haryana in the first quarter of 2021. The first jail radio of Haryana was inaugurated by Shri Ranjit Singh (Jail Minister), Shri Rajiv Arora IAS, Additional Chief Secretary (Home and Jail) And Mr. K. Selvaraj, IPS(DGP).
District jail Jind to be covered under phase III
Presently, the phase II of bringing radio to the jails of Haryana is in progress. This includes District Jails Karnal , Rohtak , Gurugram and Central Jail (I) Hisar.
District Jail Jind has been selected in phase III along with District Jails Sirsa, Sonipat, Jhajjar and Yamunanagar. Jail Superintendent of District Jail Jind, Mr. Sanjeev Budhwar told that there is a lot of enthusiasm among the inmates with the news of arrival of radio soon in their jail. They will share their feelings through the microphone which is like a dream come true.
About Tinka Tinka Foundation
Haryana Jail Radio is conceptualized by Dr. Vartika Nanda, founder of Tinka Tinka Foundation. Previously, the Foundation had started Jail Radio in District Jail, Agra in 2019. The growth of prison radios in Haryana are part of an ongoing study on the Tinka Tinka Model of Prison Reforms. Dr. Vartika Nanda heads the Department of Journalism at Lady Shri Ram College, University of Delhi.
